Game a Week – Week 01

Hi Internet – I’m Dan Rosas, a game designer, part time barista, casual musician, and proud dog owner. Over the last six years, I’ve had the pleasure of working on some relatively successful titles – Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Scribblenauts Unmasked to name a few. While I’ve enjoyed working with talented developers on these larger titles, I’ve missed being able to bring my own visions into fruition. To help motivate me to work on projects outside of work, I’ve decided to subscribe to Rami Ismail’s “Game a Week” methodology.

I’m committing to the following rules:

  1. Every Monday I will begin a new project from scratch.
  2. I will spend at least 20 minutes a day dedicated to the project.
  3. Every Sunday I will post whatever I created, for free, on this website.

I began my first project last Monday, so here’s what I came up with!

Breaq

Breaq is a “one-button” 3D take on the classic Arkanoid. The player uses the mouse to protect a red cube while clearing all the white cubes that surround it. Also music.

This was too hard to control. I felt like I wanted the mouse to be more sensitive.

Also, some kind of feedback – positive or negative, would be really nice. It wasn’t entirely clear if I was supposed to stop the ball from hitting the cube for as long as possible, or if I was supposed to clear out all the tiles and “rescue” the red square. “Save me?” Save me from cube prison, or save me from the evil sphere that is slowly destroying my house?

Either way, it would be nice to know “You did it really fast.” or “You survived as long as possible!” Whichever one of those is appropriate. I played it twice.
